Terms of use
These terms apply when you use the Tradeloop website, ask for an online estimate, sign in, or trade in a phone, tablet or laptop at a taking-part store. By using the website or trading in, you agree to them.
1. Online estimates
The value calculator and online estimates are a guide, not an offer. They are based on what you tell us about the device. The offer is made in store, after staff check the device, and it can be lower or higher than the estimate. An estimate is valid until the date shown on it.
2. Trading in
- You must be 18 or older, and bring your South African ID document or passport. Staff check it before anything is registered.
- Staff check the device's condition, that it works, and that it is not reported lost or stolen. They then make you an offer.
- You can say no to an offer and take your device home. There is no charge for the check.
- A device that is not worth anything can be recycled for free, if you ask us to.
3. What you confirm when you trade in
When you accept an offer, you confirm that:
- I own this device, or its owner has allowed me to sell it.
- The device is not stolen, lost or under a finance agreement.
- I have signed out of my accounts and removed what I want to keep.
If any of this is not true, the trade-in can be cancelled and the store credit taken back, and we may report it to the police. Once a trade-in is accepted, the device becomes ours and cannot be returned.
4. Your data on the device
Back up what you want to keep and sign out of your accounts (such as Apple ID or Google) before you trade in. We wipe every device we accept using a recognised data-erasure method, but we are not responsible for anything left on it.
5. Your store credit
When you accept an offer, you get store credit on a voucher. It is not paid out in cash or any other way, and it cannot be exchanged for cash.
- How long it lasts: 36 months from the day it is issued. We remind you 30 days before it expires, if we have your email address or cellphone number. Credit left after the expiry date lapses.
- Where you can spend it: at any taking-part store of the retailer where you traded in.
- Spend it in parts: what you don't spend stays on the voucher. You can see the balance on your receipt and when you sign in to see your trade-ins.
- Keep the code private: anyone with the code can spend the credit, so show it only at the till. Tell the store straight away if you think someone else has your code; we can stop credit that has not been spent yet.
6. Signing in
You can sign in with a code we send to your email address or cellphone number to see your trade-ins, vouchers and estimates. Keep your email and phone secure; anyone who can read the code can sign in as you.
7. Using the website
Use the website lawfully and only for its purpose. Don't try to break, overload or get around its security, or collect information from it with automated tools. We may suspend access that breaks these terms.
8. Your rights and our responsibility
Nothing in these terms takes away your rights under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 or any other law. As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for loss that comes from the website being unavailable, or from information you gave us that was wrong.
9. Privacy
We record your ID and your device's details, as the Second-Hand Goods Act 6 of 2009 requires. The privacy notice explains what we collect, why, how long we keep it and your rights. The PAIA manual explains how to ask for records we hold.
10. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The version on this page applies from the date it is published. A trade-in or voucher already issued keeps the terms that applied when it was issued, unless the new terms are better for you.
11. Law and questions
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa. Ask at any taking-part store, or contact us through the contact page.
